Presentations from the Habitat Restoration Workshop
Since the 1980s, Oregonians have been restoring more natural conditions to selected coastal wetlands. Through much of the twentieth century, many acres of wetlands and estuaries were diked, drained or filled to reduce marshes and create developable land. Over the last decade researchers have tested many techniques in the South Slough for restoring salt marshes, tidal channels and streams. Much of this work is done with guidance from the Winchester Tidelands Restoration advisory group. The advisory group includes restoration specialists, scientists, managers of protected- or special-use coastal natural resource areas, conservationists and land owners.
The advisory group met 11-12 July, 2007 to review progress on habitat restoration and native oyster restoration in the South Slough estuary, and continuing habitat restoration in the Salmon River estuary north of Lincoln City, Oregon. The advisory group meets as needed to review restoration projects and plans.
The advisory group helps to communicate the results of habitat restoration at the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is a valuable tool for providing decision makers with the latest science-based information about habitat restoration. Members include scientists and restoration specialists, and may include individuals seeking further advice, training or technical assistance for planning and monitoring their own habitat restoration projects.
